If your looking for something to do on a Saturday afternoon try the Coors Tour in Golden, Colorado. Its fun and free!
If you want a little history about Golden and why Adolph Coors built his brewery there, make sure you take the shuttle to the entrance.
Once inside there are some huge dioramas to keep you occupied. The wait was a short 15 minutes.
Coors produced malted milk during prohibition to keep the business running. Because he made malted milk and a "near beer" he was able to keep from laying off a single employee.
The first thing you notice when you walk in is the smell of Hops and if you haven't smelled it before you are in for a treat.
These are the tanks that hold the beer....
And me in the hot and sticky brewing room.....
Ali in the hot sticky brewing room....
This would be the coolest job ever....too bad it takes a lot of training and I'm sure the wait list is crazy long. Check out the bottles on display behind the door.
So as you all know Coors ships their beer cold and these are the train tracks for the refrigerator cars that run through the middle of the brewery.
These are germination beds used to turn the barley into soluble starch. See its educational too.....we learned a few things even after taking the tour a few times.
Ahh....packaging. They actually produce more cans than bottles by a very large percentage, we were surprised.
12 packs speeding by.....neat-o.
Interesting question, and if you cant read it, it says...."Why do Coors Light cans sink to the bottom when in a barrel of ice water when other cans stay at the top?"
Answer....less air. You get the point
So the BEST part of the tour is the 3 free beers at the end. In previous years we figured out a way to get more than 3 but they fixed their system, bummer.
So how happy was Ali to get out of the tour and smoke a cigarette? This happy......
This is Mt Zion with the "M" of Colorado School of Mines.
During the tour we learned about a special beer that is only served in 7 bars in Golden and Denver. So we walked up to the Capital Grille to try one. It's called "Barmen," it's full-bodied and smooth and it takes 6 to 7 minutes to pour one glass.
But worth every minute.
The glass actually makes a difference in the taste of the beer. The bartender let us try the same beer in a regular glass and it was so different, who knew. Try it if you can find it.
Funny coaster...never seen this one before.
Ali and I enjoying the "Barmen!"
So this was really funny and we had to include it. We were sitting at the bar talking to the bartender and he wasn't answering us. He was watching the guys outside on the patio and one of them was walking around with a metal chair attached to his back. He had managed to get the scroll of the chair spiraled onto the belt loop on the back of his shorts, and he couldn't get the chair off. So he had to get his friend to help him. The whole bar was watching them so Ali took pictures....he he he So embarrassing! Then success....
So one of us had to take advantage of this moment....and it was me.
And were did we go after leaving Golden? Hubba's of course. This is Jim. He's super.
And Hubba's means Pinball. The actually just got a new game, The Simpsons Pinball Party. I have to say it's not all that great. Surprisingly we prefer The Terminator.
Yep... we play this a lot. In fact Jess had a fabulous night. She kicked my ass....
Yes, that says over 71,000,000 pints. Kicked my ass.
Saturday nights they have a live band. This night it was a band called Colfax. They were a pretty good cover band playing things like The Pixies, Weezer and Green Day. They even did an excellent rendition of End of the World by R.E.M. Only when they apparently ran out of material and started to repeat songs did they lose us.
But all in all they did provide a good soundtrack for the evening.
I just love this picture. Jess looks really hammered but she's not. It makes me laugh.
